Why FDA Compliance Must Be a Priority

At the heart of the working practices employed by those companies which manufacture medical devices and medication is FDA compliance. Being compliant ensures that the consuming public is not at risk when consuming new or existing products. FDA compliance covers an array of business aspects from Good Manufacturing Practice to labelling, packaging and marketing.

Because the FDA is an agency of the United States Federal Government it has the power to legislate and to enforce that legislation. It is therefore able to inspect working practices within the companies under its regulation. FDA compliance has a central role in the food (with the exception of poultry and red meat), drugs, medical devices and cosmetics, as well as other industries. The sole aim of enforcing FDA compliance is to safeguard the health of consumers by ensuring that products are consistently high quality.

FDA compliance should always be central to the daily workings of any businesses which are regulated by the FDA. Failing to comply with the strict regulations set out in the legislation does have grave consequences. There is the very serious potential for public injury and even death. This is especially true in the medicinal industry. Companies which are found to be defying regulations can be prosecuted and in serious cases of breach of regulations large fines and individual prosecutions can be brought. Also, the FDA does publish a list of those companies which have failed to comply.

The FDA can also order product recalls and seizures which can damage public confidence in a brand, underling FDA compliance’s importance. it is sometimes claimed that there is too much red tape involved in compliance. All the same, few would repute the importance of promoting public safety. The FDA constantly works to make its regulations as simple to follow as possible, because they would be pointless if they prevented research and development. Several consultancy firms offer auditing services to help businesses ensure that FDA compliance does not become a problem.
